Becoming Part of the Dojo

There are two components to becoming a member of the dojo:
1. The student is in good financial standing with the dojo
2. The student obides by the Rules and Regulations set forth by Emory Aikikai
Dojo members of Emory Aikikai MUST belong to Fitness Emory and the Aikido Schools of Ueshiba (ASU) to hold rank or test.

Please fill out an Emory University waiver and return it to either Emory Aikikai or the WoodPEC. This paperwork must be resubmitted each school year, and students must join Fitness Emory to particpate in club activites such as seminars and special events. Please fill out the required form and return it to a representative of the Aikido club along with payment. NOTE: A special form must be filled out for non-Emory members; please see a club representative for a copy of this form.

Being Part of the Dojo

There is more to being a member of a dojo than paying dues. A dojo is a family, and everyone within the dojo has responsibilities and obligations to make the community prosper. Aikido is not a commodity and cannot be bought, given, or received. Aikido is learned and learning takes time and effort.

In the Dojo, a book by David Lowery, is a great introduction to the responsibilities of training in Japanese martial arts. Students should actively participate in the activities of the dojo, from cleaning the dojo to sweeping the mat. Take pride in maintaining a clean practice area. Another important comment is a student's obligation to his (or her) fellow students. We can not train without each other, so make effort to attend class diligently and give others the opportunity to train.

Finally, students should commit to training. Purchase the proper training attire, weapons, and other necessities for class. Share thoughts with fellow students, read books, watch videos, attend class. Commitment is essential to healthy and regular training.
